Wash Day with DevaCurl: Curly Hair Care Products for All Curl Kind

It’s a difficult time of year for curls, or maybe it’s just me! My curls do great in warmer weather months, sometimes a little too well, but in cold weather months I have a hard time keeping my hair moisturized. This year I asked for some hair products because while battling my “dry season”, I am also 8 months post-partum. I have FINALLY stopped experiencing the shedding part of post-partum but my hair is still dry and life-less.

We have a large family so we did a Secret Santa deal this year, blah, blah, blah. Long story sort, my dad ended up choosing my name and got me a little set up of Deva Curl products in hopes of taming this dry, brittle mess atop my head!! Since I have only ever tried the Deva Curl No-Poo and Conditioner, I thought it may be helpful to other curlies to do a little review of the products. For this review I will ONLY be discussing the product performance, not the packaging or availability.

So, before we jump in, let me just let everyone know a few (potentially) helpful things about me and my hair. As stated above, I am currently about 8 months post-partum. Prior to pregnancy, my curls were POPPIN!! During pregnancy I experienced very dry hair but it grew A LOT. Post-partum has me looking like a drowned rat!! I have been natural for 8 years but only started seeing the benefits of being natural in the last 3 years or so. I am not sure of my hair “type” (4c, 4, all of that) but my hair is wavy in the front and more ringlet curls as it moves towards the back. I will attach a photo of my pre-pregnancy curls and my post-partum curls below. I prefer cream products to gel-type products, as I prefer a more bouncy, tousled curl, than a slick look. Finally, a few product lines that I have seen positive results with in the past are Cantu and Mielle Organics (they had a wonderful kit last year for Christmas of the leave in and curl cream with a comb for $9.99…no such luck this year).

Okay, so now that we have the facts out of the way, on to the review. First, I washed my hair with the Curly Kids Detangling Shampoo. I did not want to trek all the way to Ulta to purchase the shampoo, so I made do with something I already had. I washed my hair twice and scrubbed it pretty good because I have several dry patches in my head.

Once out of the shower I towel dried my hair and used the Deva Curl Melt Into Moisture Deep Conditioner. It says you can leave in for 3 mins and then rinse but for deeper moisture to leave in for 15-30 mins with a plastic cap. Since I am struggling so much with dryness I opted for the 30 mins with the plastic cap. The conditioner is a mint green color and smells fantastic. It is thicker in consistency and my hair was noticeably soft as soon as I put it in. After rinsing the conditioner out my hair was soft and I could tell it had added moisture but it wasn’t “blow me away” moisturized.

I towel dried my hair once again and sprayed the Deva Curl No Comb Detangling Spray. I actually DID use a comb, whoops, but the comb slid through my hair like butter. I had MINIMAL hair in the comb once my hair was all combed out and I loved the smell of the detangler.

I went in sections with the Deva Curl Leave-in Decadence. I was not a fan of the scent of the conditioner, which I realize isn’t the most important part, but it turned me off from the beginning. I was also not very impressed with the “conditioning” of the leave-in. When I think of a leave-in I think intense moisture (Asiam Leave-in Conditioner or Hair Dew come to mind). It had slip but just not the amount of slip I have experienced with products that tend to do well in my hair. Overall it was just “okay”.

I again went in sections with the Deva Curl Super Stretch and Supercream respectively. My dad actually purchased the Super Stretch by accident, as its reallhy for those who are going to do braid-outs or bandtu knots, however I was going to be duffusing so I didn’t really think it would make that much of a difference. I also added the Super Cream to give it a little help. The Super Stretch was very creamy, which I love in a curl product. I went in lightly because too much could easily weigh your hair down. I went over it with the Super Cream and scrunched prior to using the diffuser. Note: The Super Stretch advises you DON’T scrunch if you are going for a more relaxed curl.

Once I was confident I had worked both products in well I was off to diffuse. I LOVE diffusing my curls to get a frizz-free, defined look. Initially I was worried because my air was just NOT diffusing as it normally would. Finally, once it was more dry it started to look a lot better. The curls are soft and my hair looks really moisturized. It FEELS frizzy in some spots though and I don’t feel the moisture will last past today.

The Deva Curl products smell amazing and there are some real winners, like the Super Cream and the No- Comb Detangler, but for the price point I feel they should ALL be winners. Also, there are so many products on their site that seem to do the same thing for the same texture of hair. I would certainly purchase the detangler again but would have to decide if it would be worth it to spend the $122.00 on the other products again!! I feel you could get similar results with products at a lower price point.

Diffused with Deva Curl products.
